Parts and Drivetrain Warranties

If you've ever purchased a new vehicle, you understand it comes with warranty protection. In most cases, you have many separate warranties covering your vehicle's components. Warranties have restrictions on time or mileage, specifically what the manufacturer covers. In addition, certain situations can void your warranty. You might find it complicated to understand these warranties and how they work. To help, Tameron Buick GMC of Daphne, Alabama, had our warranty experts provide insight into the current warranties, detailing how they work, what's covered, and how long they last.

GMC and Buick Bumper-To-Bumper Limited Warranty

As sister companies owned by General Motors, it shouldn't come as a surprise that GMC and Buick offer similar warranties. When you purchase a new GMC or Buick vehicle, you'll get the Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty. While the warranty says limited, it covers every part of your new car. This warranty's limitation comes in how long the coverage lasts. In this case, you have three years or 36,000 miles of protection, whichever milestone comes first.

Your Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty provides coverage to correct any defects in material or craftsmanship, including parts and labor. So, if anything goes wrong, you won't pay a cent to have the problem fixed. Your coverage extends to the tires but not against wear. Also, you get a free tow to the nearest dealership to have your car repaired.

You don't have coverage for routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations. In addition, slight noises or vibrations can occur as part of normal operations and don't receive coverage under warranty. Finally, your warranty won't cover any damages sustained in an accident or resulting from failing to maintain your car, misuse, or certain modifications.

Many drivers want to accessorize their vehicles, and we encourage this with a line of GM-authorized accessories. Using these to modify your vehicle won't void your warranty. However, if you use aftermarket parts or accessories to fix or modify your car, you run the risk of voiding your warranty. To be certain, we encourage you to contact our parts center for details.

GMC and Buick Powertrain Limited Warranty

These warranties typically protect you for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. However, Tameron Buick GMC can offer you extended coverage when you purchase your vehicle or any time before the initial coverage expires. Again, your coverage includes protection against defects in materials and workmanship of your powertrain components. So, you have coverage on your drivetrain under this warranty.

Covered components include your vehicle's engine and all its constituent parts. In addition, this warranty covers the transmission, transfer case, drive shaft, and every other part responsible for propelling your car. Not covered under this warranty are various sensors, wiring, connectors, hoses, radiator, coolant, and cooling lines.

Emissions Control System Warranty

A separate warranty covers your vehicle's emissions control system, including the catalytic converter, engine control module, transmission control module, and diagnostic control modules affecting your emissions system.

The coverage depends on the type of vehicle. For example, light-duty cars and trucks have a two-year or 24,000-mile warranty on most emissions system parts. Select parts can have an eight-year or 80,000-mile warranty. All heavy-duty trucks come with this eight-year/80,000-mile warranty on emissions system parts.

Corrosion Protection

This warranty covers all body and sheet metal components against corrosion. The coverage typically runs three years or 36,000 miles, the same as your Limited Warranty. However, you can extend this coverage at the time of purchase or before your Limited Warranty expires.

Rust-Through Protection

In addition to Corrosion Protection, you also get a Rust-Through Protection warranty that covers an actual hole in any body or sheet metal component caused by rust. Your standard coverage lasts for six years or 100,000 miles, but you can extend the length at the purchase time or any time before the Limited Warranty expires.

How To Get GMC and Buick Warranty Repairs

Provided you take the necessary steps, obtaining warranty repairs is easy. First, you should take your vehicle to a GMC or Buick dealership, so they can diagnose the problem and determine the warranty coverage. After that, you can have work completed at an independent shop. However, any work done outside a GMC or Buick dealership may not qualify for reimbursement.

Diagnostic fees apply, but if the dealership determines the repair qualifies under warranty, the dealership waives the fee. So, for example, if you bring your GMC Sierra to Tameron Buick GMC's service center for diagnostics and our service center determines the repair falls under your warranty, we won't charge you for diagnosing the problem. Instead, we'll discuss the necessary steps to repair the issue, including the parts involved and the time needed to complete the job.

In addition, we have a loaner program to provide you with a replacement vehicle if your repairs leave you without your car for an extended period. If we can't give you a loaner, you can have rental charges reimbursed. Our warranty service technician can provide you with the coverage details, including the refund you will receive.

Additional GMC and Buick Warranty Plans

As mentioned earlier, you can extend the length of specific plans and add select protection plans. These plans vary from prepaid maintenance plans that cover all your routine maintenance for a pre-selected time frame to gap insurance coverage that protects your financial investment in case the insurance company deems your car a total loss in an accident. You can also opt for additional tire and wheel protection. This plan pays to repair or replace tires and wheels damaged by road hazards and other incidents outside your control.
