Let's Talk About Towing Capacity

GMC and Ford are both known for rugged, work-ready vehicles that can carry plenty of weight and remain stable in various road conditions. That said, their potential towing capacities are quite distinct, depending on what type of vehicles you're comparing. If you want a clean comparison of several GMC and Ford models, Tameron Buick GMC has the guide for you. Let's compare GMC versus Ford towing capacities for 2022 models.

2022 GMC Terrain vs. Ford Edge

As GMC's smallest SUV currently, the 2022 Terrain can tow up to 1,500 lbs. with the right optional equipment. The Ford Edge is in the same class as the Terrain, and the 2022 version tows a minimum of 1,500 lbs and potentially 3,500 lbs with the right engine and packages. If 1,500 lbs of towing capacity work for you, the Terrain's starting MSRP of $27,900 is almost ten grand cheaper than the Edge, which starts at $37,410.

2022 GMC Acadia vs. Ford Explorer

The 2022 Acadia can tow anywhere from 3,500 to 4,000 lbs, based on your choice of either the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine or 3.6-liter V-6. The Acadia is often compared to the Ford Explorer, and 2022 editions of the Explorer can tow anywhere from 5,000 to 5,600 lbs.

While this difference may make Ford look like the winner, the Explorer is heavier at 4,345 to 5,076 lbs, over the 2022 GMC Acadia's weight range of 4,155 to 4,525 lbs. As far as power for weight in an agile package, you might enjoy the Acadia more during your excursions and commutes around Alabama.

2022 GMC Yukon vs. Ford Expedition

The 2022 Yukon is the king of the GMC SUV segment, and the Yukon XL alternate model has all the same features with an extended wheelbase giving you and your family lots of extra room. The Ford equivalents of these two models would be the Expedition and Expedition MAX. However, the Expedition MAX's expansion slightly improves cargo room and third-row passenger volume, while the Yukon XL focuses on enhanced third-row comfort.

The 2022 GMC Yukon can tow anywhere from 7,500 to 7,800 lbs depending on the model. Upgrading to the XL version lowers its bottom-end range minimally to 7,400 lbs. In contrast, the 2022 Ford Expedition's towing capacity is fixed at 6,000 lbs, which is pretty unremarkable compared to the Yukon's capacity. The 2022 Expedition MAX is slightly more promising, ranging from 6,000 to 6,300 lbs of max towing.

2022 GMC vs. Ford Trucks

The 2022 Ford F-150 full-size truck can tow up to 14,000 lbs after buying upgrades and options, base models start at 8,200 lbs, and various work features like Pro Trailer Backup Assist are standard. The GMC Sierra 1500, the same size as the F-150, provides 8,800 to 9,400 lbs of maximum towing capacity depending on the configuration, making the Sierra the more powerful base model.

You can also choose the Sierra 1500 Limited for a no-nonsense, ultra-powered light-duty pickup with best-in-class turbo-diesel horsepower and 8,800 to 9,600 lbs of potential maximum towing. On the heavy-duty side, GMC's Sierra HD comes in with as much as 14,500 lbs. of max towing, while the 2022 F-250 ranges from 12,300 to 15,000 lbs. Depending on how much power you need, either the Sierra HD or F-Series could suit.

Finally, let's look at compact pickup trucks. The 2022 GMC Canyon can tow up to 3,500 or 7,000 lbs, depending on the engine. The 2022 Ford Ranger has a flat maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, barely competing with the same year's Canyon. Ford offers a few other models in the mid-size or smaller level that don't compare with anything on the GMC lineup.

2022 GMC Hummer EV

We'd be remiss not to introduce the new all-electric 2022 GMC Hummer, a revival of the classic square SUV as a zero-emissions off-roading beast. This new Hummer offers two functional styles: a standard hatchback SUV style and a pickup truck with a 5 ft bed. The SUV is an excellent fit if you need plenty of cabin space, with a cavernous 48-cubic-foot cargo zone. Meanwhile, the pickup provides a comfortable design with a short bed attached in place of the cargo area and hatch. You can even go top-down for open-air cruising with either model.

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV SUV can tow up to 7,500 lbs. The pickup has the same remarkable tow rating, and you can toss an additional 1,300 lbs in the bed. Those power ratings are just one of many benefits of the 2022 Hummer, like up to 11,500 lb-ft of torque on both body types. Pickup truck models offer an incredible 1,000 horsepower on some editions, while the SUV version gets up to 830 horsepower.

As an electric vehicle, off-roading SUV, or pickup truck, the 2022 Hummer has some of the most groundbreaking features we've seen in decades. Some notable examples include the diagonal CrabWalk mode, 4-Wheel Steer, the water-fording, boulder-traversing Extract Mode for the adaptive suspension, and Super Cruise hands-free highway driving.

Is GMC or Ford Better For Towing?

In a nutshell, GMC offers impressive towing capabilities, impressive features, and specs everywhere you'd want them to shine. For instance, most of the lineup also has AT4 versions that take the same capabilities and features and optimize them for off-roading. Ford also designs cars and a few other vehicle types, whereas GMC specializes in multipurpose SUVs and trucks. As a result, you'll find that many GMC models offer more to choose from than the closest Ford counterpart.

Please don't take our word for it. You should compare the GMC and Ford's capacities and features yourself before deciding. Overall, if you need superior towing capacity from your next vehicle or are looking for the best value for your money on an SUV or truck, we think a GMC is what you need.
